City of Contrasts (Part 2)

Friday, 6/17

During the bike tour we saw a lot of the same things as we did during the Market Tour. However, we rode early in the morning, and that makes a big difference.

Mumbai manifests itself as three different beasts in the summer. The Morning Beast is tractable. Her beat is calm and slow, and her blood pressure is low. She’ll listen, as long as you are a good teacher. You have to respect her rules, and listen as she does. When she says “go”, then you go. But when you stop, she will wait with you. She welcomes your wandering curiosity.

But as the heat rises, she transforms into the Day Beast. She is capricious with dramatic emotions. Her fiery heat beats down and lights your world ablaze. No, she’s not a docile beast; you listen to her. You move with her beat. Your blood pressure rises with hers. She is your teacher.

Every beast tires out. The Night Beast is a mystery to me, as we barely were acquainted during my trip. But from what I heard, and what I experienced, I sense that she is the most contemplative of them all. Her lights flicker with a certain charm and dignity. She reminds you that you are merely human, and that every action you take on her soil is with her permission.

After the bike tour, we headed to Pune.
